The heart of the country

Dance of Delight is based in the small village of Charlton Kings, near the Spa town of Cheltenham in Gloucestershire in the heart of the English Cotswolds.

Location

Nearby are numerous villages worth visiting, including Stanton and Stanway, Broadway and Snowshill, as well as many Roman remains, wonderful gardens and historic houses.

Music

It's hardly surprising that there's a long tradition of music-making in the Cotswolds. There are morris-dancing "sides" and some very well-known tunes have been collected from villages around here - one of the most famous being "The Holly and the Ivy", which was noted down by Cecil Sharpe at Chipping Campden. In the pubs you can catch regular music sessions where you'll hear everything from English traditional music to Venzuelan folk tunes, blues harmonica, Irish, Scottish and Welsh melodies. In addition there are groups playing music from Shakespeare's time and earlier on original instruments or authentic copies.
